Laumeier Art Fair
by Oscar Matos Linares on 06/05/11
The first event of the season is always hard to do. You wondering if you are ready after some time off. You load your van or car. You triple check your list. Closed your eyes and relax and you head to the grounds of the festival. You look forward to some sales but you always want the hit home run. At the end you are happy with any sales.
I saw and talked old friends, artist and new people. Enjoy the people that visit my tent. The thing that make this show special was talking to my artist friends, my friends and feel the sun after a long winter in Chicago, IL.
Why we purchase art
by Oscar Matos Linares on 02/15/11
Why we buy art.
It had suggest to purchase one piece of art once a month or no less than one piece per year. This purchase will change your live. There is art for each budget.
I grew up in Puerto Rico and art is not even in the map while I was growing up. I actually never took an art class while in school. My father gave me my first camera while in University and I never look back. Took few class of photography in University of Sacred Heart with Antonio Sanchez, Don Osvaldo and Nitza Luna. After that I came to Chicago to study in Columbia College.
My art allows me to relax and forget about my problems. I can not think a good way to bring joy in my daily life. When you see art create emotions, memories and awareness. With out art we will have lot empty spaces in our live. Saving memories of your families and art could be the most important thing in our live.
That is why we invest in art.
Why

A friend ask me why I do shows. Another ask me are you doing shows for real income or hobby. My wife ask me how you choose shows and please stay away from the suburbs shows.
I start doing art fairs mainly because the gallery and cafe shows was not producing income to support keep producing my art. After a while I have learn to only well establish art fairs and small shows that friends recommend. I also look at The Art Fair Source Book. I also use sources like the art show photo group and art fair insiders to keep up update info and new ideas of the business end.
Art fairs are a retail business and does have is up and down. You need to keep it cool during the art fair mainly because you are done everything you can and prepare as well as you can. When you start the show it is out your hands, do only thing you can do is work the sales floor and hope for the best.

Starting
by Oscar Matos Linares on 12/29/10
Going to school for photography is not must but help you to understand and created better end results. When I started my goal is was to get 100's images a week. That goal had been reduce to 10 quality images per week. From those 520, I only display 20 to 50 in giving year at the art fairs.
I still prefer capturing all images with film. My lab stop accepting film so I was force to scan all my negatives or/and slide so they can still printed them in wet lab.
After I get the images from the lab, I matted them and some of them they get frame. Good quality of framing is a must. The trick with all this is to keep your cost down. Keeping the cost down means a lot of do it yourself.
